USAID Uhuru

USAID has granted Tanzania Health Promotion Support (THPS) the Cooperative Agreement to execute the Tuberculosis (TB) and Family Planning (FP) Facility Solutions Activity. This project, spanning from July 2020 to 2025, designates THPS as the primary recipient, with Ifakara Health Institute, MKUTA, and Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation Tanzania serving as subgrantees. The overarching aim of the program is to enhance the health outcomes of Tanzanian citizens. This encompasses a set of primary objectives, along with corresponding project goals.

Main Objectives

  • To improve access and use of quality TB and FP services
  • Increased TB case detection and linkages to treatment, and increased prevalence of modern contraceptive use among young girls, married women, adult and adolescent males.

Project Objectives:

  • To improve access to/use of high-quality, person-centred TB, DR-TB, and TB/HIV services at 150 HFs in Katavi, Kigoma, Rukwa and Songwe regions.
  • To reduce TB disease transmission and progression through health facility-based service delivery
  • To strengthen access to and use of quality FP services at health facilities

In the USAID Uhuru Activity, MKUTA is implementing Tuberculosis (TB) and Family Planning (FP) Facility Solutions across 22 councils in four priority regions: Kigoma, Katavi, Rukwa, and Songwe. The primary focus is on stimulating demand among clients visiting supported health facilities to improve active detection of individuals with TB and contribute to closing the national gap in TB case notification rates.

In 2023, MKUTA successfully trained 30 Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) from the Rukwa region, along with four MKUTA Regional CHV leaders and three MKUTA staff members, on appropriate awareness and knowledge regarding FP through Health Education (HE) among beneficiaries. MKUTA Volunteers in the Rukwa region conducted health education sessions on family planning methods, reaching a total of 116,570 clients (130,834 females and 63,616 males).
